English should not be dropped as official EU language – Ní Riada MEP

28 June, 2016 - by Liadh Ní Riada MEP

Sinn Féin MEP has raised the prospect of English being dropped as an official language of the EU following a British exit from the EU.

Speaking from Brussels Liadh Ní Riada said:

“I am more used to defending the status of the Irish language than arguing for protections for the English language, and I am enjoying the irony of this moment. This is a seriousissue however. English is an official language of Ireland, and a language used by a great many people in Ireland and throughout the EU, and its position must not be altered.

“It is unthinkable that English would cease to be an official language of the EU in the event of Brexit, and its knock on effect on employment, on services, and crucially on the ability of many Irish people to engage with the EU, cannot be overstated.

“English is not a language in danger of extinction, Nor in need of any special protection or promotion. That said, it is important for Ireland that it remains an official language in Europe, alongside Gaeilge.

“I want to say very clearly, however, that English remaining an official language of the EU cannot be at the expense of Irish. There is room in Europe for both, and I am calling for a commitment from the Irish Government that it will advocate for English to remain on as an official language of the EU alongside Irish and the other official languages.” ENDS

Ní cóir fáil réidh le Béarla mar teanga oifigiúl an AE – Ní Riada

Labhair an Feisire Eorpach de chuid Shinn Féin Liadh Ní Riada inniu mar gheall ar an moladh chun fáil réid leis an mBéarla mar teanga oifigiúl san AE i ndiaidh Brexit.

Ag labhairt sa Bhruiséil duairt Liadh Ní Riada:

“Tá níos mó taithí agam ag déanamh cosaint ar stádas na Gaeilge ná ar bheith ag tacú leis an mBéarla. Mar sin táim ag bain taitneamh as an íoróin seo. É sin ráite is ceist dáiríre é seo. Is teanga oifigiúil dár dtír é an Béarla, agus príomh teanga a lán daoine anseo in Éirinn agus ar fud na hEorpa. Níor chóir stádas an Bhéarla a athrú.

“Tá sé doshamhlaithe nach mbeadh Béarla mar teanga oifigiúil an Aontais Eorpach i ndiaidh Brexit, agus is léir go mbeadh drochtionchar ar fostaíocht, soláthar seirbhisí agus go mórmhór ar féidireacht a lán chuid Éireannach plé le institiúidí na hEorpa.

“Níl an Béarla i mbaol báis nó níl cosaint nó cuir chun cinn ag teastáil ón Béarla, ach é sin ráite tá sé tabhachtach dár dtír go gcoimeadfaí Béarla mar teanga oifigiúil san Eorap, taobh leis an nGaeilge.

“Teastaíonn uaim bheith an-shoiléir mar gheall ar seo; ní féidir le caomhnú an Bhéarla bheith ar chostas na Gaeilge. Ta spás san Eorap don dhá teanga, agus táim ag glaoch ar rialtas na hÉireann bheith gníomhach ar son Béarla agus Gaeilge a choimead, ar chomh-chéim, mar teangacha oifigiúla den AE.” ENDS
