Mary Lou McDonald to raise Console scandal at Public Accounts Committee
Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald has said she has asked the incoming chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee Seán Fleming TD to ensure that the financial irregularities at the charity Console are top of the agenda for next week’s committee meetings.
Speaking today Deputy McDonald said she is alarmed at reports that the charity’s founder and two of his family members benefitted by almost €500,000 in salaries and cars over three years and that thousands of euro’s of the charity’s money was spent on personal expenses.
“Reports over the last week of alleged financial irregularities at Console are quite alarming and smack of similar recent controversies.
“I have been in touch with the incoming chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee Seán Fleming TD to request that this issue is top of the agenda when the committee meets next week.
“We cannot allow the charity sector to be repeatedly undermined by scandals such as this. It is imperative that we get the full facts on exactly what has happened so that we can ensure that it never happens again.
“The reality is that it is the people who depend on this and other charities who will suffer as a result of these revelations and it will be the state, and ultimately the taxpayer, that picks up the tab at the end of the day.”
