Nolan welcomes clarification on new Disability Transport Legislation
Sinn Féin TD for Offaly and North Tipperary, Deputy Carol Nolan, has welcomed clarification from the Tánaiste that the Health (Transport Support) Bill is on schedule for the heads of Bill to be published in July 2016. Deputy Nolan raised the issue this afternoon in the Dáil with the Tánaiste.
Commenting on the exchange, Deputy Nolan said:
“I welcome the fact that the Tánaiste has clarified that the heads of the Health (Transport Support) Bill will be published in July 2016.
“The motorised transport grant and the Mobility Allowance Schemes were abolished in 2013 for new applicants and this has caused significant hardship and isolation for those with disabilities.
“People with disabilities have waited three years for the establishment of replacement schemes and it is important that a replacement scheme is established as soon as possible.
“I was disappointed that the Tánaiste did not respond to my specific queries in relation to the proposed scheme, which I felt would have been helpful in reassuring those with an interest in this area.
“Sinn Féin will continue to highlight this issue and work to ensure that a suitable alternative transport scheme for people with disabilities is put in place as soon as possible.”
