Chris Hazzard welcomes fresh inquiry into Colum Marks’ killing
Sinn Féin's Chris Hazzard has welcomed an announcement today that Police Ombudsman Michael Maguire is to launch a fresh inquiry into the RUC killing of Colum Marks in Downpatrick in 1991.
The South Down MLA said:
"This is welcome news for Colum's family, friends and the wider community here in Downpatrick.
“IRA Volunteer Colum Marks was shot dead by the RUC when he was unarmed and could have been arrested. At the time a decision was taken not to prosecute anyone involved.
"It might be 25 years since Colum was killed but the unanswered questions have left a real sense of injustice and hurt with the Marks family.
"I hope this investigation will help get to the truth of what happened and I call on the RUC officers involved in Colum's killing to cooperate fully with the Ombudsman's investigation."
