Reilly must clarify position after latest revelations in charity scandal - Mary Lou McDonald TD

2 July, 2016

Sinn Féin Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald TD has said former Minister for Health, James Reilly must clarify his position following reports that he was made aware of concerns about the role and activities of Console CEO Paul Kelly as far back as 2013, yet did nothing.

Mary Lou McDonald said:

“In 2006, a former employee had written to HSE with concerns around Console and Paul Kelly’s role in it.

“In 2009 the Office for Suicide Prevention flagged its concerns about inconsistent accounts.

“Now it emerges that the Minister for Health of the day, James Reilly, was informed of these issues in 2013.

“The whistleblower was fobbed off by Minister and his Special Adviser. So, we now have evidence of state complicit in this scandal.

“If the Office for Suicide Prevention was aware in 2009 of 'inconsistent' accounts, how in 2013 was the Minister and the Department of Health able to give Console a clean bill of health, as they did?

“It is scandalous that it took so long for this malpractice to come to light. There are serious problems with HSE vigilance and major flaws in the whole system, including at the Department of Health.

“That this would directly involve a Government Minister will be of major concern to the public.

“James Reilly, and indeed the Government, must immediately clarify their positions in relation to this developing scandal.”
