McElduff tells BIPA meeting that democratic rights must be respected
Sinn Féin MLA Barry McElduff has told today's meeting of the British-Irish Parliamentary Association in Dublin that the democratic rights of the people of the North must be respected.
Speaking at a meeting of the British Irish Parliamentary Association in county Dublin, Mr McElduff said;
"I told those in attendance the people of the North of Ireland had clearly voted to remain in the EU and that vote must be respected.
"I made it clear to the Irish and British parliamentarians that Brexit is not in the best interests of Ireland.
“The fact that British Secretary of State Theresa Villiers was such a advocate of a leave vote shows the British government does not act in the best interest of the people of Ireland, either in the North or in Europe.
"I welcome the announcement of an all-Ireland Forum, as proposed by Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams, to discuss the impact of the vote.
"It is important the forum is made of a wide cross section of society, including all Assembly parties, Oireachtas parties, EU parties and wider civic society."
