Ní shásaíonn córas an Roinn Oideachais an t-éileamh atá ar Ghaelscoileanna

5 July, 2016

De réir figiúirí a nochtadh ón Roinn Oideachais agus Scileanna don Teachta Dála Peadar Tóibín  Sinn Féin le déanaí, níl ach seacht scoil ó na 42 scoil a bunaíodh ó 2011, faoin bpróiseas nua pátrúnachta, ina ngaelscoileanna.  Chomh maith le sin is scoileanna ilchreidmheacha iad go léir idir bhunscoileanna agus iar-bhunscoileanna, faoi Phátrónachta an Fhóras Pátrúnachta.

Ag labhairt dó inniu deir Teachta Tóibín:

“Tá a fhios againn cheana féin go bhfuil 23% de thuismitheoirí na tíre ag éileamh oideachais trí mheán na Gaeilge. Ní shásaíonn an córas mar atá, ach 4.7% den éileamh úd.

“Go simplí, ní shásaíonn córas pátrúnachta an rialtais an  t-éileamh atá ar Ghaelscoileanna.

“Anuas ar sin chun éagsúlacht a bhaint amach, rud atá mar bhunchuspóir an chórais reatha, caithfear dul thar fóir chun an scéal a réiteach, agus chun an meán a réiteach thar ama, rud nach bhfuil ag tarlú i leith an ghaeloideachais.

“Tá sé léirithe ag earnáil an ghaeloideachais ó 2011 ar aghaidh,  go bhfreastalaíonn siad ní hamháin, ar an dátheangachas, ach ba scoileanna ilchreidmheacha, lán –Ghaeilge ar fad  a bunaíodh  faoin bhForas Pátrúnachta.

“Caithfidh an rialtas dul i bhfad níos faide chun an t-éileamh atá ann don ghaeloideachas a shásamh amach anseo.  Sin atá ag teastáil ag tuismitheoirí na tíre.

“Tá fás agus forbairt as cuimse tagtha ar an nGaeloideachas faoi láthair agus beidh amach anseo nuair a aithneoidh tuismitheoirí tairbhe an oideachais  dhátheangach.”

Demand for Gaelscoileanna is not being met

According to figures recently revealed to Sinn Féin TD Peadar Tóibín, by the Department of Education and Skills, Gaelscoileanna only account for seven schools of the 42 that were founded since 2011, under the new process for school patronage process. These primary and post-primary Gaelscoileanna are multi-denominational and under the patronage of an Fóras Pátrúnachta.

Speaking today Teachta Tóibín said:

“We already know that 23% of parents would like their children to be educated through the medium of Irish. The current system only satisfies 4.7% of this demand.

“Simply put, under this and the previous government, the demand for Gaelscoileanna is not being met.

“On top of that, the system should go above and beyond to promote diversity in all its forms, and to reach an average over time, which is one of the objectives of this current system, something which is clearly not being done in the case of Irish medium education.

“Since 2011, the Irish medium education sector has shown that it not only caters for bilingual education, but also for multi-denominational or non-denominational education. All of the schools founded under An Fóras Pátrúnachta, since 2011, were multi-denominational.

“The government must go much further to satisfy the real demand that is out there for Gaelscoileanna. This is what parents are asking for, and this desire and demand for Gaelscoileanna is only going to continue growing as parents become more aware of the benefits of a bilingual education.”
