Dáil Must Debate Coveney's Housing Action Plan before Dáil summer recess – Ó Broin
Eoin Ó Broin TD, Sinn Féin spokesperson on Housing, has asked Minister for Housing Simon Coveney if he will publish his Action Plan on Housing before the Dáil summer recess. He also asked the Minister to ensure that there will be Dáil time set aside to debate the plan before the Dáil breaks up for the summer.
Deputy Ó Broin said:
“Today, I asked Minister Coveney to state whether we can expect the publication of his Action Plan for Housing before the Dáil summer recess on the 21st of July. It is vital that this issue is not left to linger over the Dáil summer break.
“I also asked the Minister to make arrangements with the government whip to ensure that time is allocated for a Dáil debate on his plan, also before the summer break. A failure to take steps towards making inroads into the housing crisis before the autumn, will unfortunately lead to emergency homeless services being further stretched and more children ending up living in hotels and B&Bs.
“I look forward to seeing the Minister’s Action Plan in full. I hope it contains some radical ideas to tackle the crisis and that it includes the recommendations recently made by the Housing and Homeless Committee.
“At a minimum, it must contain measures to substantially increase the number of real social housing units, to ensure that housing is affordable and that more protection is provided to those in mortgage distress and tenants in the private rented sector.”
