UUP failure to support EU nationals living here a disgrace - Glidernew
Sinn Féin MLA Michelle Gildernew has said the abstention of UUP MPs from a vote yesterday in Westminster calling for EU nationals living here to be allowed to remain in the wake of Brexit was disgraceful.
Speaking today the Fermanagh South Tyrone MLA said:
“MPs Tom Elliot and Danny Kinahan actively abstained in a vote in Westminster calling on the British Government to grant EU nationals living here the right to stay following a proposed British exit from Europe.
“Quite clearly the people of the North of Ireland voted to remain. With that vote we sent a clear message that EU nationals were welcome here, that their contribution to our society is valued.
“Within Tom Elliot’s own constituency there are Portuguese and eastern European communities who are very worried about the consequences of a Brexit.
“The level of uncertainty now faced by EU nationals living in the north of Ireland is entirely unacceptable and the refusal of the UUP MPs to support them is a disgrace.”
