Political will and collective working required to deal with tyres on bonfires - McMullan
Sinn Féin MLA Oliver McMullan has said political will and collective working is required to tackle the burning of tyres on bonfires.
The East Antrim MLA said;
"The problem of burning tyres on bonfires emerges year after year in July and it is long past time action is taken.
"Burning tyres is not only illegal, it is harmful to the environment and public heath and needs to be stamped out.
"If there is sufficient political will it can be stopped and we need to see all parties take this issue seriously and make a concerted effort to ensure it is dealt with.
"Enforcement is a major issue and we need to see enforcement agencies working together with tyre suppliers and other agencies, including local councils, to prevent the supply of tyres to bonfire builders and to take appropriate action if they are burned.
"I intend to bring forward proposals to help end the scandal of burning tyres in the new Assembly term."
