Sinn Féin supports call for cross-party Oireachtas group on corruption - Eoin Ó Broin TD
Sinn Féin TD Eoin Ó Broin has welcomed the call by the Chief Executive of Transparency Ireland, John Devitt, for the establishment of a cross-party Oireachtas group on corruption. Deputy Ó Broin said that “Sinn Fein would support the creation of such a group and would be raising it with other parties in the coming week.”
Mr Devitt made the call this morning during his address to the Sinn Féin Summer School in Baile Bhúirne, Co Cork.
Welcoming the suggestion, Deputy Ó Broin;
"A legacy of cronyism and corruption has eroded public confidence in the political system. We have seen, in recent times, how corruption extends beyond the institutions of the state and has had a devastating impact on the lives of many people in Ireland.
"Unfortunately, there has been tendency to deal with incidents of corruption in an ad-hoc and isolated way.
“It has been an approach which has failed to recognise the fact that corruption can often be systemic, a central aspect of political and management cultures, and a much broader problem than the actions of individuals.
"John Devitt's suggestion would create a platform and active agreement, between all parties in the Oireachtas, to place the issue of corruption firmly on the political agenda with a sharp purpose and focus. It would ensure that corruption is examined and addressed in a continuous manner rather than only being spoken about when a high-profile case occurs.
"The establishment of such a group would be a significant and positive step forward, and the idea should be widely welcomed. It would be a very progressive move to bring together all political perspectives in the Oireachtas in an effort to develop legislation and strategies to assist and govern the fight against corruption in public life.
"Radical political reform is vital to restore confidence in State institutions and other areas in which the Oireachtas has oversight.
“Sinn Fein will be contacting other parties next week to discuss the establishment of the cross party oireachtas group with a view to agreeing ways to increase transparency & accountability in public life and to tackle and reduce corruption.”
