Kenny should proceed with All-island Forum
Sinn Féin MEP Matt Carthy had urged Taoiseach Enda Kenny to press ahead with the proposal for an all-island Forum to discuss the implications, North and South, of the recent Brexit referendum result, despite DUP objections.
Speaking this evening at a public meeting in Carrick-On-Shannon, Co. Leitrim, Matt Carthy said:
"It is very important that the Irish Government works closely with all willing parties North and South, to establish a National Forum to discuss how the North's ‘remain’ vote in the Brexit referendum will be respected.
"I do not accept that the DUP's rejection of this proposal should be allowed to stand in the way of its establishment.
"Vetoes, of this kind, have no place in the Ireland of 2016.
"There are unionist voices who will attend a Forum aswell as representatives from the agriculture, business and community sectors.
"The Taoiseach must now exercise his national responsibilities by convening a meeting with party leaders in the Dáil, to discuss the establishment of this Forum."
