Urgent action needed to tackle damage and misery caused by bonfires - Maskey

13 July, 2016 - by Paul Maskey

Sinn Féin MLA Paul Maskey has said urgent action is needed to tackle the damage and misery caused by bonfires.

The West Belfast MP said:

"Over the last few days we have seen dozens of bonfires across the north.

"Unfortunately we have witnessed the damage bonfires can cause, most notably with the disgraceful destruction of family homes in the Shankill Road area.

"Not only does this bring misery and hardship to families it also raises serious questions about who will cover the cost of repairing damage caused by bonfires and whether insurance companies will provide cover.

"Our social housing sector is already under stress and the wanton destruction of family homes as a result of bonfires will only add to that.

"We need to see action and leadership to tackle all aspects on bonfires, including the damage to property and the environment and the hate crimes associated with burning election posters, flags and other items." Ends/Críoch
