Hayes TTIP remarks “dripping with arrogance” – Matt Carthy MEP

13 July, 2016

Sinn Féin MEP Matt Carthy has hit out at comments by fellow Irish MEP Brian Hayes regarding the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) negotiations.

Mr Hayes today called on US and EU negotiators to finalise the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) “as quickly as possible” before what he termed “populists” influenced the debate on the controversial trade deal.

Responding, Matt Carthy said:

“Brian Hayes’s latest comments are dripping with the arrogance and elitism which we have come to expect of Fine Gael representatives.

“The sheer contempt in which Mr Hayes holds the citizens of Europe shows that he has learned nothing from the problems created by the Brexit referendum and the crisis of legitimacy which now confronts the EU project.

“I and my fellow Sinn Féin MEPs have consistently pointed out the grave dangers of TTIP. We are not alone in this. Organisations representing farmers, workers, health advocates, small businesses and environmentalists have all expressed deep concern about this trade deal and what it could mean for countries like Ireland.

“For our part we are opposed to TTIP under its current mandate and will challenge attempts to reduce the standards Irish citizens have come to expect in relation to food safety, the environment, and the rights of workers and consumers.

“Rather than acting as a little cheerleader for TTIP, it would suit Brian Hayes to join us in demanding that Irish interests are protected in all EU trade deals.

“TTIP will have severe and far-reaching consequences for Ireland, but these negotiations have been shrouded in secrecy.

“Mr Hayes should address this lack of democratic accountability rather than engaging in counterproductive insults against Irish and European citizens and those public representatives who are doing their job in holding power-holders to account."
