Ferris supports protest by swcallop fishermen

8 March, 2005

Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Fisheries, Martin Ferris TD, has voiced his support for scallop fishermen who are holding a protest outside the Dáil today. The South East Fishermens Organisation is staging the protest as part of its ongoing opposition to EU restrictions on the scallop quota that has been allocated to Irish fishermen. They claim that it makes it impossible for most of their members to make a living.

Deputy Ferris: "The cut in the scallop quota illustrates the deep problems that are facing Irish fishermen. Effectively, we are in a situation in which fewer and fewer fishermen are able to remain economically viable. The entire basis of the regulation of the Irish sector needs to be renegotiated so that Irish fishermen are given a fair share of the quotas from Irish waters, and are given a statutory say in the overall regulation of the sector."
