Government continues to show disrespect to the Irish language – Carol Nolan TD

14 July, 2016

Sinn Féin’s education spokesperson, Carol Nolan TD has expressed her disappointment that there have been cuts to Irish summer camp schemes.

Deputy Nolan said:

“These camps do great work to inspire children in the 32 counties to learn Irish. This cutback interferes hugely with the progress of the language throughout the 32 counties. Because of the cuts of €35,000, 23 additional camps will be cancelled. Irish language organisations apparently didn’t have any choice but to cancel these camps at the last minute because of the lack of money and government support.

“Many of these camps were held last year and now children and parents are disappointed that they won’t be going ahead this summer.”

Deputy Nolan said that that summer camps do great work in promoting the Irish language.

“They promote Irish and help develop children’s language skills.  A lot of parents decide to send their children to these summer camps because they can’t afford the fees associated with a stint in the Gaeltacht.

“This cut back shows that the government are not treating these parents fairly and that they are not fulfilling their obligations in promoting the Irish language.”

An rialtas fós ag léiriú drochmheas maidir leis an Ghaeilge – Carol Nolan TD

Dúirt urlabhra Oideachais Shinn Féin, Carol Nolan go raibh díomá uirthi go raibh ciorrú déanta ar scéimeanna campaí Samhraidh.

Dúirt an Teachta Nolan:

“Déanann na campaí seo obair iontach ó thaobh spreagadh páistí an teanga Gaelach a fhoghlaim sna 32 chontae. Cuireann an ciorrú úd seo isteach go mór ar dul chun cinn na teanga ar fud an 32 chontae. Anois de bharr na chiorruithe de €35,000, beidh 23 campa breise curtha ar ceall. De réir dealraimh, ní raibh an dara rogha ag na heagraíochtaí Gaeilge  ach na campaí seo a chur ar ceall ag an nóiméid deireanach de bharr na heaspa airgid agus de bharr na heaspa tacaíochta ón rialtas.

“Bhí go leor de na campaí seo ar siúl anuraidh agus anois tá díomá ar pháistí agus tuismitheoirí nach mbeidh said ar siúl i rith an t-samhraidh.”

Dúirt an Teachta Nolan go raibh na campaí samhraidh ag déanamh sár obair ar son na teanga Gaeilge.

“Bíonn said ag cur na Gaeilge chun cinn agus ag forbairt cumas na bpáistí sa teanga. Déanann a lán tuismitheoirí an cinneadh a gcuid páistí a sheoladh chuig campaí samhraidh toisc nach bhfuil said in ann íoc as na táillí a bhaineann le tréimhse sa Ghaeltacht.

“Léiríonn an ciorrú seo nach bhfuil an rialtas ag tabhairt cothrom na féinne do na tuismitheoirí seo agus nach bhfuil said ag comhlíonadh a ndualgaisí ár dteanga dúchais a chur chun cinn.”
