Impact of Brexit a concern for fisheries community at the Killag Show - Ní Riada
Liadh Ní Riada MEP attended the Killag show today where she met representatives of Kilmore Quay fishing community, who expressed apprehension at the potential lack of access to British territorial waters among other concerns.
Liadh Ní Riada, who is a member of the fisheries committee in Brussels, said:
“The potential impact of Brexit was a great worry. The fact that British territorial waters, which make up 39% of EU territorial waters, may no longer be accessible to Irish fishermen is a matter of huge concern.
“Also there were questions as to whether fishermen in the North will have access to the twelve mile limit of other member state’s territorial waters.
Liadh Ni Riada was glad to report that she had proposed that the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) will be safeguarded and that this was adopted by the parliament.
“Again, fishermen expressed concern that the government would be proactive in forthcoming quota negotiations to protect the livelihood of Irish men and women who make their living from fishing.”
