Delays in Children’s Medical Cards ‘playing havoc with lives’ – Funchion

19 July, 2016 - by Kathleen Funchion TD

Sinn Féin TD and junior spokesperson for Children and Youth Affairs Kathleen Funchion has called on the Government to support the Sinn Féin motion which would guarantee medical cards for children in receipt of Domiciliary care Allowance, saying “adding extra pressure on parents to wade through streams of paper and bureaucracy in order to prove their child or children’s challenges or disability is inhumane”.

The Carlow-Kilkenny TD said:

“It’s an outrage that parents have to continuously fight so tirelessly for their children’s right to adequate support ; children suffering with severe illness or disabilities.

“Adding extra pressure on parents to wade through streams of paper and bureaucracy in order to prove their child or children’s challenges or disability is inhumane. It’s wrong.

“We should be creating a society that puts children and their needs first; a society that protects those children most in need. By supporting our Bill today on Domiciliary Care, the Government would be sending the message that those children are, in fact, priority.

“The messy delays that exist in the system are playing havoc with children’s lives. They are unnecessary and an abuse of those children’s rights to equal treatment of health and development.

“In this centenary year, the words of our Proclamation are been echoed across the state time and time again. Children have been learning about the meaning of those words in our schools as part of our centenary celebrations. In part the Proclamation declares it’s ‘resolve to pursue the happiness and prosperity of the whole nation and of all its parts, cherishing all of the children of the nation equally’.

“Proposed Budgetary change for 2017 is too late. A year is an incredibly long time in a child’s life. Too much damage can be done to a child’s progression; the changes need to happen now.”
