Ó Donnghaile presses for Presidential Voting Rights ahead of Summer Recess
Sinn Féin Seanadóir Niall Ó Donnghaile has again raised the issue of enfranchising Northern Citizens with a vote in Presidential Elections on the floor of Seanad Éireann.
Speaking under Commencement Matters in the Seanad this morning, Senator Ó Donnghaile welcomed the Minister’s commitment to delivering on this issue but that there should be no undue delay.
The Senator from Belfast said:
“I welcome Minister English’s comments to me this morning, the calls by the Constitutional Convention and the outworking of the Good Friday Agreement should be no further prolonged. I appreciate fully that this change will need particular preparatory work, particularly when it comes to extending votes to our diaspora.
“There is specific and much more concise work to be done to enfranchising citizens in the North however; I encouraged the Minister to expedite this work and to work with his colleagues in the North to ensure we no longer go without this very fundamental and important right.
“While a timeframe wasn't exactly forthcoming today, I do welcome the Government's apparent commitment to resolving this outstanding anomaly.
“This is something I will return to the Minister on in the new Oireachtas term as well as my membership of the Good Friday Agreement Committee over the coming weeks ahead.”
