Senator Niall Ó Donnghaile appointed to Good Friday Agreement Committee

21 July, 2016 - by Niall Ó Donnghaile

Belfast Sinn Féin Senator Niall Ó Donnghaile has been appointed to the Good Friday Agreement Committee.

Speaking this afternoon Senator Ó Donnghaile welcomed his appointment saying he will push for full implementation of all the outstanding elements of the agreement including a Bill of Rights and an Irish Language Act.

He said;

“The Oireachtas Good Friday Agreement Committee is an important group working to ensure the full implementation of the agreement.

“I am delighted to have been appointed to this committee and will work hard to ensure that all the outstanding elements are implemented including the Bill of Rights and the Irish Language Act.

“It is also important that we deal with legacy issues and that means putting pressure on the British Government, and the new Prime Minister Theresa May, to lift the veto they have in place which is blocking progress on this vitally important issue.

“Recent political events mean we live in uncertain times.  The recent decision of the British People to leave the European Union and the vote of the people in the North to remain in Europe has escalated the debate about a United Ireland.

“We welcome that debate and I will use my position on the Good Friday Agreement Committee to push for the triggering of the clause to allow for a Unity Referendum.”
