McGuinness meets relatives to discuss need for British government to fund legacy inquests

21 July, 2016 - by Martin McGuinness

Sinn Féin MLA Martin McGuinness has today met with relatives of victims of the conflict to discuss the need for the British government to fund inquests into conflict-related deaths.

Speaking after the meeting, Mr McGuinness said;

"I met today with relatives of victims of the conflict and campaign groups to discuss the need for the British government to provide funding for inquests into conflict-related deaths.

"I assured the relatives that I will be pressing the new British Prime Minister Theresa May and new Secretary of State James Brokenshire to live up to their responsibilities on dealing with the past.

"They need to release the funding for inquests, as proposed by the North's most senior judge, Lord Chief Justice Declan Morgan, in order allow families access to truth about what happened to their loved ones.

"It is disgraceful that families, some of whom have been waiting for more than 40 years, have had to face continual delays and frustrations because of the actions of the British government."
