Buckley welcomes the retention of oil refinery in Whitegate
Sinn Féin TD for Cork East Pat Buckley has welcomed news that Irving Oil will take up the running of the refinery at Whitegate on a commercial basis, saying that it is a key employer in the area and of strategic importance for the Irish energy market.
Deputy Buckley said:
“This is good news for the people of East Cork and Cork County as a whole. The Refinery contributes over €100 million to the local economy and is a vital piece of Ireland's infrastructure. Job certainty for the 160 employees who are directly employed at the plant is to of crucial importance and there are at least another 440 jobs created in the area indirectly.
“This decision will also let Ireland have some control of the pricing of our fuel which is of great importance in such a volatile industry. I have raised this on a number of occasions over the years at County Council level and again with the former and present Ministers for the Environment.
“Only recently, I had received and email and a follow up call from a newspaper in New Brunswick where the family-owned group Irving Oil operates Canada's largest refinery.
“It was an interview with regards to the potential takeover from Irving Oil, were we discussed the importance of job retention of its workforce and the detrimental effects it would have had if Whitegate Oil Refinery was to close.
“I will be expecting a follow up call from the newspaper in the near future. Finally, it's a great day for East Cork and a great day for Ireland's oil industry.”
