Quinlivan welcomes Lidl jobs announcement
Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Maurice Quinlivan TD has welcomed the announcement by Lidl that it is to create 600 jobs in Ireland over next two years.
Speaking from Limerick this morning, Deputy Quinlivan said:
“The creation of jobs is always good news, especially in the current economic climate and I welcome this morning’s announcement by Lidl that it is to significantly increase its workforce in Ireland over the next two years.
“The reality is that we still have a very high unemployment rate and a particularly alarming youth and long-term unemployment rate, so any progress must be acknowledged.
“That being said, while genuinely welcoming such announcements, we must also be vigilant regarding the quality and conditions attached to any jobs announced. It is vital, while paying staff a decent hourly rate, that Lidl ensures that all its employees have sufficient hours of work each week.
“It is positive that the government is saying that these jobs will be spread throughout the state. However, it's absolutely vital that the government does more to address the frightening historical regional imbalance in job creation.
“Announcements like today cannot be marquee type announcements. We need to see many more jobs being created and they must be decent jobs with decent pay.
“There is a great deal more to be done, especially if we are to create a sustainable economy in which the hundreds of thousands of people that left this state in the last decade, in the hope of finding employment elsewhere, feel confident in returning home to work.”
