The risk of infection in University Hospital Galway, highlighted in a report on an Unannounced Inspection by HIQA there, is concerning, according to Sinn Féin Senator, Trevor Ó Clochartaigh.

Speaking after the report was published today, the Galway West – South Mayo Senator says:

“The heightened risk to patients due to contamination that are caused by factors relating to the physical environment and management of equipment being highlighted by HIQA are very concerning.

“The report focusses on shortcomings in hand hygiene practices and training as well as particular deficiencies in relation to infrastructure and maintenance on the paediatric ward.

“They also highlight the need for improvement in relation to medication management and unsafe injection practices. HIQA have also recommended that the hospital reviews the practice relating to the preparation and administration of intravenous medication, to assure itself that the potential risks to patients in this regard are fully mitigated.

“They say that compliance with Hand Hygiene practice and training must also be improved.

“It is not clear from the HIQA report why these issues are still arising. Whether the staff in question are under time or workload pressures is not addressed and it would be important to get a response from the hospital and staff in this regard.

“While noting some improvements on previous inspections HIQA are bringing to light serious concerns which must be addressed by the SAOLTA Hospital group to ensure patient safety at all times.”

Baol ionfhabhtú in Ospidéal na hOllscoile Gaillimh ina ábhar imní - Ó Clochartaigh

Tá an baol ionfhabhtú in Ospidéal na hOllscoile Gallimh a léirítear i dtuairisc Cuairt gan Choinne a thug an Áisíneacht Sláinte HIQA orthu le déanaí, ina ábhar mhór imní, dar le Seanadóir Shinn Féin, Trevor Ó Clochartaigh.

Ag labhairt dó i ndiaidh don dtuairisc a bheith foilsithe inniu, deir Seanadóir Ghaillimh Thiar – Maigh Eo Theas:

“Tá an baol níos airde ionfhabhtú  d’othair mar thoradh ar chúinsí a bhaineann le cruth fisiciúil an ospidéil agus bainistiú trealamh atá arduithe ag HIQA ina chúis imní i ndáiríre.

“Díríonn an tuairisc go sonrach ar laigeachtaí cur chuige maidir le cleachtais agus oiliúint ó thaobh glaineacht láimhe di agus maidir le h-infreastruchtúr agus cothabháil ar bharda na leanaí ach go h-áirithe.

“Díríonn siad méar freisin  ar an ngá le feabhsúcháin i mbainistiú cógais leighis agus cleachtais úsáid snaithaidí nach bhfuil sábháilte. Tá sé molta ag HIQA chomh maith go ndéanfaidh an t-ospidéal athbhreithniú maidir le cleachtais a bhaineann le h-ullmhú agus feistiú cógais infhéitheacha chun cinntiú go maolaítear an baol d’othair sa gcomthéacs seo.

“Deireann siad chomh maith, go gcaithfear cloí i bhfad níos daingne le caighdeáin ó thaobh glaineacht láimhe agus oiliúint ina leith seo.

“Níl sé soiléir ó thuairisc HIQA áfach, cén fáth an bhfuil na fadhbanna seo ann i gcónaí. Ní léirítear an é go bhfuil an iomarca brú ama agus oibre ar an bhfoireann, nó céard si cúis leis na fadhbanna agus bheadh sé tábhachtach tuairim na bainistíochta agus na h-oibrithe faoi seo a fháil.

“Cé go n-aithnítear roinnt dul chun cinn a bheith déanta ar chuairteanna gan choinne a rinneadh roimhe seo, tá HIQA ag tabhairt cúiseanna imní chun cinn go gcaithfidh an grúpa ospidéil SAOLTA aghaidh a thabhairt orthu chun go mbeidh sábháilteacht na n-othar chun tosaigh i gconaí.”
