HSE must react urgently to lack of speech therapists – Kenny
Speaking from his constituency office in Ballinamore today, Sinn Féin TD Martin Kenny called on the HSE locally to speed up the recruitment process for speech & language and occupational therapists in Co Leitrim.
Deputy Kenny said:
“At the end of June, from across the Dáil chamber, the Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald assured me that the funding was there for the recruitment of speech & language and occupational therapists when I pointed out the serious problem, particularly in Leitrim.
“I told her that there was no pre-school speech and language therapy available now. This has a serious effect on young children, who, if they are helped at an early age can avoid difficulties as they get older.
“The Tánaiste said at the time that the problem was recruitment, but since then I have found that the HSE has a recruitment panel of therapists already, but has not begun a recruitment process.
“The children needing therapy cannot be told to wait any longer. They and their parents deserve better. Funding was provided and action was promised but it seems like the HSE is not acting with urgency to deal with this damaging delay for the children in Leitrim who need speech therapy.
“I call on the HSE to begin the recruitment process and to make appointments urgently.”
