Government’s heavy handed approach to teachers must end - Carol Nolan TD

9 August, 2016

Sinn Féin Education spokesperson Carol Nolan has called on the government to end its heavy handed approach to ASTI teachers.

Deputy Nolan said Minister for Education Richard Bruton should work closely and respectfully with the ASTI to ensure that there are no school closures in September as a result of the ongoing dispute over new entrants pay.

She said;

“The reality is that despite not signing up to the Lansdowne Road Agreement the ASTI teachers have been working their extra hours but the government’s response has been to cut pay for new entrants and to threaten further sanctions.

“That is not an appropriate approach from government.  The heavy handed approach needs to end.

“New entrants did not cause the financial crisis and they should not be made to unfairly shoulder the burden for the mistakes of others.

“Minister for Education Richard Bruton should work closely and respectfully with the ASTI to ensure that there are no school closures in September as a result of this ongoing dispute.  The heavy handed approach has not and will not work.”
