O’Dowd concerned about impact of Brexit on universities
Sinn Féin national spokesperson on Brexit John O’Dowd has expressed concern about how the uncertainty around Brexit will affect our universities.
The Upper Bann MLA said:
“EU nationals make up more than 20% of academic staff in our universities and they are uncertain about their status in the wake of the EU referendum.
“This uncertainty also impacts on potential recruitment of academic staff for the universities.
“Potential recruits are concerned because they are unsure of how they will be treated if the British government invokes Article 50 of the Lisbon Treaty.
“Ending this uncertainty must be a priority for all concerned.
“Sinn Féin believes the British government must acknowledge and respect the Remain vote of the people of the north and indicate to Europe that the north will not be any part of invoking Article 50.”
