Today Cllr. Tom Healy welcomed community support for the development of the N59 following the public meeting in Maam Cross Thursday 11th August.

Cllr. Healy said:

“Tonight's meeting showed that there is a vast groundswell of support in demanding a road worthy of the 21st century on the N59 in Connemara. People from every corner of Connemara tonight turned out to show their desire to have a safe modern N59 to serve their needs as equal citizens in Ireland. Public reps from most parties and Independents were in attendance, and there was unanimity in purpose.

“Following on from this public meeting, we will all be calling on all people to show support for the Connemara N59 action group, and to participate in helping the group collect its petitions as well as pressuring the NPWS and other authorities to progress with the Maam Cross to Oughterard section without further delay. Other actions agreed will be meetings between Oireachtas representatives and An Bord Planála as well as NPWS and Galway County Council. ”

“Tonight's meeting highlighted that there is not a single person that is not affected by the adverse condition of the road. People of all walks of life, from those who use the road to work, to those who need it to access Galway regional are negatively impacted from the poor quality of the road. As long as the road remains substandard, Connemara people will feel as if they are being treated as substandard denied equal opportunity and effectively placing a cap on economic growth in the region.

“Connemara has a population equalling that of Leitrim and is nowhere given the same level of infrastructural support. The recent CSO preliminary census data should prove worrying in light of this because is Connemara can't provide a basic level of infrastructure, then it will be guaranteed that we will continue to lose population and the most unique facet of the Connemara region, it’s people and culture, will be lost. ”

"Connemara needs a movement, a movement in the spirit of the Gaeltacht civil rights founded over 47 years ago, every community, every family, every person should motivate themselves to get involved with the campaign and we should be single minded in purpose until the road is finally completed. There has been enough delay, and given how slow works of this scale take, we have no time to hold back.

“It's time for the people of Connemara to rise as one and be heard in Dublin and beyond. My thanks to all who attended, my hope is that this is beginning of a movement that will revitalise Connemara and give it’s unique people and culture a chance in to the future. Further public meetings will follow and I will do everything I can to help."

Fáilte roimh na céimeanna tosaigh maidir le forbairt N59 ach go leor le déanamh go fóill - Cmhlr. Ó hÉalaí

Chuir an Comhairleoir Tom Healy inniu fáilte roimh thacaíocht ón phobal maidir le forbairt N59 i ndiaidh cruinniú poiblí a reáchtáladh ar an Teach Dóite Déardaoin 11 Lúnasa.

Dúirt an comhairleoir Tom Healy do Pháirtí Sinn Féin gur:

"Léirigh cruinniú na h-oíche anocht go bhfuil fás san tacaíochta in éileamh bóthar atá ar chomhchéim le riachtannaisí na 21ú haoise, san gcás seo an N59 i gConamara. Tháinig daoine ó chuile chúinne de Chonamara amach anseo anocht ag taispeáint a mian bóthar N59 a bheadh nua-aimseartha, sábháilte chun freastal ar a gcuid riachtanais mar chomh shaoránaigh Éireannach. Bhí ionadaithe poiblí ón gcuid is mó de páirtithe póitiúla agus Neamhspleáigh i láthair, agus bhí siad aontaithe ó thaobh cuspóir dhe.

“Ar shála an chruinnithe poiblí seo iarann muid ar an bpobal a dtacaíocht a thaispeáint don ghrúpa gníomhaíochta Chonamara N59, agus a bheith rannpháirteach i gcuidiú leis an ngrúpa siniúcháin a bhailiú chomh maith le brú a chur ar an NPWS agus údaráis eile chun an obair ó Chros Bhóthar Mháma go hUachtar Ard a thógáil láithreach. Aontaíodh ar gníomhartha eile comhaontaithe, ina measc bhí cruinnithe idir ionadaithe Oireachtais agus An Bord Pleanála chomh maith leis an NPWS agus Comhairle Chontae na Gaillimhe. "

"Thaispeáin cruinniú na h-oíche anocht nach bhfuil duine amháin san bpobal nach bhfuil tionchar ag drochstaid an bhóthair orthu. Tá tionchar ag drochstaid an bhóthair ar dhaoine ó chuile gné den saol, ó na daoine a úsáideann an bóthar ag dul ag obair dhóibh, chomh maith leo siúd a bhíonn dhá úsáid ag dul chun na cathrach dóibh. An fhaid is a bheidh an bóthar ar an gcaoi ina bhfuil sé faoi láthair sin faoi bhun caighdeáin, beidh muintir Chonamara ag ceapadh go bhfuilfear ag caitheamh leo ar bhealach mí-chothrom agus bac dhá chur ar fhás an gheilleagair san réigiún. Tá an daonra céanna i gConamara agus atá í gCo Liatroma, ach ó thaobh infreastruchtúr dhe, tá muid go mór ar gcúl agus dhá bhrí sin beidh an daonra ag titim.

"Ta Gluaiseacht ag teastáil í gConamara, gluaiseacht le spiorad Chearta Sibhialta na Gaeltachta a bunaíodh níos mó ná 47 bliain ó shin, chuile pobal, chuile teaghlach - ba cheart go chuile duine iad fhéin a spreagadh agus a ghríosadh a bheith páirteach san bhfeachtas agus a bheith d’aon intinn ár sprioc a bhaint amach sin bóthar nua go Chonamara. Tá a ndóthain moilleadóireacht feicthe againn agus faoi go dtógann an cineál seo oibre, sin tógáil bóthair, roinnt mhaith ama - caithfidh muid tosaí láithreach, nil aon am le cailleadh.

“Tá sé thar am ag muintir Chonamara eirí aníos agus a nglór bheith le cloisteáil í mBleá Cliath agus níos faide ó bhaile. Mo bhuíochas go chuile duine a d'fhreastail ar an gcruinniú seo, tá mé dóchasach go bhfuil tús curtha againn le gluaiseacht athbheochana i gConamara a chuirfeas borradh le lenár gcultúr, ár dteanga agus ár n-oidhreacht. Beidh cruinnithe poiblí eile dá n-eagrú againn agus tá mé libh le cabhrú libh ar aon bhealach."
