Additional counselling supports needed on release of Leaving Cert results – Buckley

15 August, 2016 - by Pat Buckley TD

Sinn Féin spokesperson on Suicide Prevention, Pat Buckley TD, has called for extra efforts to be made to provide counselling supports for students as they receive their Leaving Certificate result this week.

Deputy Buckley said;

“Being a teenager today is very hard. There is a huge amount of pressure on young people to succeed and to fit in. Coupled with the sharing of the most minute details of their lives on social media, this can create a really difficult situation for a young person who is struggling.

“The Leaving Certificate is a very stressful time, it should be very exciting and hope filled, but not everyone does as well as they, their family or their friends expect.

“Every year we hear stories of young people who took their results, the end of school or fear of the future badly and ended up taking their lives. We have to ensure that these tragedies are avoided as much as possible. We have to ensure that any young person who needs support, reassurance or care receives it and is able to access it.

“Counselling and support services for teenagers receiving their results this week must be prioritised and increased to avoid more tragedies.”
