Martin Ferris calls for release of report on Corrib

16 March, 2005

Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Natural Resources, Martin Ferris TD, has called on the Minister for Communications, Marine and Natural resources to publish the Quantitative Risk Assessment report received from Shell on the proposed development of the Corrib Gas field. Deputy Ferris also voiced his full support for farmers in Mayo who have been issued with a High Court injunction by Shell. Ferris claimed that the refusal to publish the full report and the issuing of the injunction are further evidence of the underhand and aggressive manner in which the project is being pursued.

Deputy Ferris said: "Last week I requested Minister Dempsey to publish the QRA in order that there be full transparency regarding Shell's proposal. In his reply he stated that Shell are preparing a so-called 'Peer Review' to be submitted in April and that he will publish all relevant documents once they have been reviewed.

"This is unacceptable for two reasons: Firstly, a 'Peer Review' will only present a non-technical summary of the QRA that will not contain the information of relevance to those concerned about the possible environmental and safety aspects of the project. Secondly, the delay in publishing the material will hamper any detailed analysis of the proposal and in conjunction with the High Court action must be seen as a possible ploy to avoid full public scrutiny of all the issues. I again call on the Minister to immediately publish the QRA."ENDS
