Brokenshire needs to look no further than Remain vote – O’Dowd

16 August, 2016 - by John O'Dowd

Sinn Féin MLA John O’Dowd has said if British Secretary of State James Brokenshire wants to canvas public opinion in the North on Brexit then he should look at the results of the referendum.

Mr O’Dowd said:

“The people of the North have spoken and they have clearly stated at the ballot box that they want to stay in the European Union.

"Before embarking on his grand tour Mr Brokenshire needs to acknowledge and respect that vote.

“We have heard much about the British Government's wish to consult and listen to the devolved administration.

"However, if you want proof of what value they actually put on consultation you only have to look at the announcement by the Chancellor at the weekend, there was zero consultation and no attempt to ensure the needs of the people of the North were being met.

"James Brokenshire needs to understand the damage his party’s ego trip has already caused to the local economy. This exercise will not undo that damage.

"He needs to respect the democratic wish of the people expressed through the ballot box and start organising how the North stays in the European Union."
