A solution must be found to Ros a Mhíl dispute - Martin Kenny TD
Sinn Féin spokesperson on Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Kenny TD today expressed support for the fishermen of Ros a Mhíl, Connemara whose shrimp and lobster fishing season is being disrupted by the actions of the Department of the Marine and the Habourmaster.
Deputy Kenny said:
“We have had representations from fishermen in Ros a Mhíl about the construction of pontoons for yachts without any consultation with them.
“I was shocked to hear that lobster pots were removed without telling their owners, in order to facilitate the construction of these pontoons for yachts. This is the time of year when fishermen, who have had to deal with very bad weather in recent months, hope to make their living out of shrimp and lobster.
“I am calling on the Minister to intervene in this situation to find a mutally acceptable solution which will allow local fishermen to make their living, while the pontoons are constructed.
“The lack of consultation has angered locals and I can understand why when it seems that, once again, the fishermen’s interests and livelihood are secondary to those in the area for the purposes of sailing their yachts.”
