Equality scheme being ignored by Unionists in Ballymena
North Antrim Sinn Féin MLA, Philip McGuigan, has written to Ballymena Council to ask if the wearing of an Orange sash during Council meetings complies with the Council Equality Scheme. This comes in the aftermath of Independent Councillor Willie Wright donning his sash during a debate on the Parades Commission.
Mr McGuigan said:
"I would doubt very much if wearing a sash complies with the Council's Equality Scheme when it comes to neutrality of emblems and symbols. I have written to the Council Chief Executive to ask him for clarification on this issue. I have also mentioned in my letter the fact that the British Union flags flies along with a picture of the British Queen.
"This is certainly not what I would consider a neutral environment for those uwho visit or work in Ballymena." ENDS
