Reform of the prison service must continue - Kearney
Sinn Féin MLA Declan Kearney has said comprehensive reform of the prison service has yet to be completed.
Speaking after the Director General of the Prison Service announced her intention to resign in October, the Sinn Féin justice spokesperson said;
"Sue McAllister has been integral to the implementation of the prison reform programme outlined in the Anne Ower report of 2011.
"Comprehensive reform of the Northern prison system has still to be completed. The management and operation of the local penal system continues to face major challenges.
"It is essential that there is now a smooth transition to the appointment of a new Director General for the prisons' service.
"The Ower Report defined the template to ensure all prisoners and staff within the system are treated with dignity and respect.
"The successful appointee to the position of Director General must be fully committed to the completion of comprehensive prison reform in the North."
