Time for Independent Alliance to stand up for taxpayers – Cullinane
Sinn Féin’s David Cullinane, spokesperson on Worker’s Rights has called on the Independent Alliance to stand with Irish taxpayers and represent their interests at today’s cabinet meeting which will discuss an appeal to the Apple tax ruling. This European Commission ruling yesterday directed the Irish government to recoup €13 billion in back taxes plus interest from Apple.
Deputy Cullinane said:
It is clear that Fine Gael is determined to appeal the Apple ruling. But it is important that Irish taxpayers are represented at today’s cabinet meeting .The Independent Alliance have an opportunity to do that. They should oppose any appeal and insist that the correct tax bill is paid by Apple.
“It’s time for the independent members of government to put the interests of Irish taxpayers above their own personal careers.
“We know where Fine Gael stand. They have previously refused to stand up to the EU when we were saddled with billions of euro of banking debt, when we had a crippling austerity regime enforced upon us and when we democratically decided to scrap water charges in the recent election. Now they are set to take on the EU to defend a multinational corporation at a cost of at least €13 billion to the tax payer.”
