ABP-Slaney merger will have serious consequences for beef and sheep farmers – Kenny

1 September, 2016 - by Martin Kenny TD

Sinn Fein TD Martin Kenny has called on Minister Michael Creed to intervene in the ABP-Slaney merger.

Deputy Kenny said;

“If this merger is allowed to go ahead it will have serious consequences for beef and sheep farmers.  It will see farm gate prices decline further and force farmers already struggling out of business.

“Allowing ABP Food Group to get a stronger grip on the meat industry in Ireland is a bad step for the industry.  It will lead to unfair competition and unfair pricing.

“We must not allow this proposed merger to drag on as uncertainty in the market is not helpful.  It is those farmers in the west of Ireland in places like Leitrim and West Cavan who are producing quality store cattle and sheep that will feel the effects of the decline in farm gate prices.

“Uncertainty in the industry will be a deterrent to farmers from buying cattle or sheep to fatten for slaughter.  I would call on Minister Creed to intervene and put an end to this merger.”
