Minister Bruton must engage with ASTI to prevent school closures
Sinn Féin Education spokesperson Carol Nolan TD has called on Minister Richard Bruton to engage with the ASTI as a matter of urgency to ensure there are no school closures as a result of strike action this month.
Teachta Nolan was speaking after the ASTI announced that it is to ballot its members on industrial action.
“It is very disappointing that it has got to this stage. The government has had all Summer to engage with teachers but it seems no effort was made.
“This dispute amounts to an attempt by the government to punish ASTI teachers into for not signing up to the Lansdowne Road Agreement.
“New teachers in particular have been singled out for pay cuts and threats of further sanctions.
“Minister Bruton needs to engage with the ASTI as a matter of urgency to prevent school closures this month. The bullyboy strategy from government needs to stop and a proper respectful negotiation should take place immediately.”
