Minister Naughten must investigate deficiencies in state body oversight - Stanley
Sinn Fein spokesperson for Communications, Climate Action and Environment, Brian Stanley TD, has called on Minister Denis Naughten to investigate why previous ministers of his Department did not put in place a Service Level Agreement with the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland.
Deputy Stanley spoke after the leak of an internal Department report that indicated deficiencies in corporate control and oversight of the SEAI.
Deputy Stanley stated:
“A revised Code of Practice for the Governance of State Bodies was published in 2009.
“There are questions which need to be answered over what previous communications ministers were doing over the past seven years that no Service Level Agreement was put in place.
“There have been no issues raised as to the running of the SEAI, however it is unacceptable that any state body handling substantial public funding can do so without formal control and oversight.
“There has been a clear failure on the part of past Labour, Fianna Fail and Green Party Ministers to ensure such oversight was in place.
“We now need clarity that there are no other state or semi-state bodies, currently operating through public finding without any Service Level Agreements.
“Minister Naughten needs to ensure this is the case and needs to get an answer as to why previous Ministers did not put a Service Level Agreement in place.”
