Minister must not delay publication of Lone Parent Review Report – Nolan
Sinn Féin spokesperson on Education and Skills, Teachta Carol Nolan, has called on the Minister for Education and Skills to ensure speedy publication of the report on the Review of Barriers to Education for Lone Parents, due to be completed at the end of August 2016.
Teachta Nolan said:
“The Review of the Barriers to Education for Lone Parents is in line with the Programme for Government Commitment and an independent researcher has been commissioned by the Department to conduct the review.
“According to a parliamentary question response by the Minister for Education and Skills, the review will identify obstacles and challenges for the various different categories of lone parents accessing and completing higher education programmes.
“The review will also recommend additional costed measures that would support lone parents in accessing and completing higher education programmes.
“According to the terms of reference of the review, the report of the outcome was due to be produced on the 31st August and I am calling on the Minister to make this report available to the public as soon as possible.
“I am aware that research commissioned by the Department of Social Protection on activation measures for lone parents has yet to be published despite an original deadline of August 2015.
“It is imperative that both of these reports are published well in advance of Budget 2017 to allow for a fully informed and robust debate of the options available to support lone parents both in seeking work, training and education opportunities.”
