Ní Riada supports presentation of Gearagh Woodland case to EU Committee
Sinn Féin MEP Liadh Ní Riada has expressed her support to Cork man, Kevin Corcoran who will address the petitions committee of the European Parliament on Thursday September 8th. Mr Corcorans' presentation will be on the Gearagh woodland, post–glacial, alluvial forest.
"The Gearagh Woodland in Co. Cork is a unique example of an ancient post-glacial alluvial forest and is designated as a Special Area of Conservation by Ireland, which is considered to be important on a European as well as Irish level.
"However Cork County Council has granted planning permission for the development of up to six wind turbines.
"I wish to express my support to Mr Corcoran and commend him for the work that he has done thus far in fighting to protect this beautiful piece of our natural history and heritage.
"I have met with representatives from the campaign group 'Free the Lee', which is a campaign aimed at recovering the Gearagh in the upper Lee Valley in County Cork. The Gearagh is a native alluvial forest and is both ecologically and culturally important and I commend Mr.Corcoran and the campaign group on their work.
"Following the presentation on Thursday, I will continue to raise this case at every given opportunity and will continue to stand with the ´Free the Lee´ group. ENDS
