Anderson calls on FIFA to ban teams in illegal Israeli settlements

7 September, 2016 - by Martina Anderson MEP

Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has called on soccer's world governing body, FIFA, to suspend the Israeli clubs based in illegal settlements over Israel's human rights abuses.

Ms Anderson said;

"There are currently at least six Israeli football clubs playing in the Israeli league who are based out of illegal settlements in the occupied Palestinian West Bank.

“FIFA should act immediately to ensure that Israeli football clubs based in these settlements are excluded from playing in FIFA-sanctioned leagues.

“These Israeli settlements on Palestinian land are illegal under international law, constitute an obstacle to peace in the region and threaten to make a two-state solution impossible.

“Allowing these clubs to play in Israeli leagues is a violation of FIFA’s own rules, which state that national football clubs have to be on the territory of FIFA member-states.

“It is also a breach of FIFA’s renewed commitment to respect and promote human rights.

“I call upon FIFA and its president Gianni Infantino to act in accordance with its own statutes and human rights commitments, and to ensure that clubs based in the illegal settlements are excluded from FIFA’s structures."
