Urgent action needed to replace Housing Selection Scheme - McCann
Sinn Féin MLA Fra McCann will table a motion calling for urgent action to be taken to replace the Housing Selection Scheme.
The party’s housing spokesperson said:
“I have raised this issue over many years and I will be bringing a motion to the floor of the Assembly on Monday.
“The present scheme is not fit for purpose.
“It is failing people on the waiting list many of whom who are in homeless hostels or over-crowded conditions waiting to be housed.
“In areas like West Belfast, North Belfast and Derry the scheme has not worked in many years, it needs to be replaced.
“A number of reviews have taken place into the scheme but successive ministers failed to come up with proposals to replace this scheme.
“I’m calling on the new Minister for Communities to bring together people from the broad housing sector including his department, the Housing Executive and the Voluntary Housing Sector to develop a selection scheme which is robust and fair.
“The new scheme must be able to deal with areas of high demand and tackle the abuse of intimidation points which many believe are being used to jump the waiting list.”
