Seeley welcomes launch of suicide prevention consultation
Sinn Féin MLA Catherine Seeley has welcomed the launch of a consultation strategy for suicide prevention.
The Sinn Féin Health Spokesperson said:
“I welcome the news that my party colleague and Health Minister Michelle O’Neill has launched a consultation on Protect Life 2.
“The strategy will aim to improve the identification and response to suicidal behaviour and to prevent suicide by people in crisis.
“In particular it will focus on repeat self-harm; and supporting those bereaved by suicide.
“An average of 274 people die by suicide each year here. This is unacceptable.
“Behind the statistics are real people, and families who are still hurting and lives left shattered.
“I would encourage people to speak to their GP if they have concerns about their mental wellbeing. Anyone who is in distress or despair can contact the Lifeline Helpline on 0808 808 8000.
“Sinn Féin will continue to engage with the Minister for Health, mental health and suicide prevention groups and statutory stakeholders on these issues to develop a comprehensive and inclusive all-Ireland strategy on mental health and suicide prevention."
