As Fianna Fáil backtrack it’s now time to abolish water charges – Ellis
Sinn Féin Dublin North West TD Dessie Ellis has urged people to attend the Right2Water's national demonstration to abolish water charges this Saturday, pointing out that the demonstrations are succeeding in putting pressure on the government.
Deputy Ellis highlighted that Fianna Fáil’s sudden U-turn on agreeing to the abolition of water charges this morning, shows that the march this Saturday could be effective in swaying the the Fianna Fáil supported Government to abolish the charges for good.
Deputy Ellis said:
"As a part of Right2Water Sinn Féin have always supported abolishing, not suspending water charges. Fianna Fáil have come to this conclusion only this morning, with Micheál Martin’s surprise announcement on Morning Ireland.
“The reason for this could be bandwagon jumping or change of heart - I'd suspect the first. One thing is clear however, this issue is still a hot topic and if we keep the pressure up, we will be successful in getting rid of this unjust tax.
“The Right2Water march takes place this Saturday, the 17th of September at 2pm, with assembly points at Connolly and Heuston Stations. I hope everyone will make an effort to attend."
