McGuigan welcomes overdue move on Causeway visitor centre

23 March, 2005

North Antrim MLA and Sinn Féin Spokesperson on Tourism, Philip McGuigan, has welcomed the announcement that the long overdue International Competition for the design of a Visitor Centre at the Giant's Causeway site is to take place.

Mr McGuigan said:

"This announcement although long overdue must be welcomed. The Giant's Causeway is accepted as the magnet that draws most tourists to the north, and particularly the north-east of Ireland. It is imperative that we have a Visitor Centre that can not only cope with the increased demand on tourism but that we have a Centre that's design can compliment the needs of those tourists.

"This competition is the first step along that path. We now need to see all the other pieces in the tourism jigsaw fall into place so that the Causeway Coast and further afield can truly match its tourist potential. This will bring considerable economic benefits to this region." ENDS
