British must fulfil its responsibilities on legacy of the past - McCann

14 September, 2016 - by Jennifer McCann

Sinn Féin MLA Jennifer McCann has said the British government must fulfil its responsibilities to address the legacy of the past. Jennifer McCann was speaking after the announcement of new appointments to the Victims and Survivors Forum.

The newly appointed Sinn Féin spokesperson on legacy issues said;

“I welcome the new appointments announced to the Victims and Survivors Forum.

 "The British government's continued failure and refusal to deal with the legacy of the conflict is adding to the hurt and pain suffered by many in our society, particularly relatives of victims of state violence and collusion.

"The British government has a responsibility to deal with its role in the conflict, including the role of its agents, and proxies in loyalist death squads.

"It can no longer place obstacles in the way of relatives by withholding information on the death of their loved ones on the spurious grounds of national security.

"Commitments were made in the Stormont House Agreement on how to deal with the legacy of the conflict.

“Those commitments must be implemented in full and I and my colleagues will continue to challenge the British government on behalf of relatives.

"All relatives and victims are entitled to maximum disclosure of truth in relation to the death of their loved ones."
