Library closure symptom of unworkable financial plan – Kenny
Martin Kenny, Sinn Féin TD for Sligo, Leitrim, West Cavan and South Donegal, has expressed his concern at the closure of Sligo Central Library, planned for Monday next.
Deputy Kenny, speaking from his party's pre-Dáil term meeting in City North, Gormanstown, said:
"The closure of Sligo's Central Library is wrong on so many levels. This is a valuable resource for children and adults in the community and the hub of many community activities. This closure comes after a series of cutbacks to library services all over the county.
"How can the closure of a library be acceptable when everything about such a community space is positive and the lack of it creates a gap which cannot be filled? It is even more unacceptable that the library should close just as the school year is getting underway.
"The crux of the matter is that Sligo County Council's financial plan is unworkable and this issue must be faced and resolved before more vital community facilities are affected.
"Today I have contacted the other TDs in the constituency and suggested a meeting with the Sligo County Council delegation which has been active on the issue of library services. Then, I hope that the elected representatives and the delegation could meet Minister Simon Coveney, who I have also contacted about Monday's planned closure."
