State has failed parents affected by organ retention

23 March, 2005

Commenting on the revelation that the Dunne Inquiry into organ retention is to be wound up without completing its work and having cost €20 million, Sinn Féin Health and Children spokesperson Caoimhghin Ó Caoláin, stated:

"It is scandalous that over four years after it was established the Dunne Inquiry will be wound up without completing its work, having cost €20 million. Over two years ago Sinn Féin's TDs tabled a Dáil motion calling for a proper inquiry and questioning the refusal of many hospitals and many in the medical profession to co-operate with the Dunne inquiry. Those questions remain unanswered. The State has failed those parents affected by organ retention and the Minister for Health and Children Mary Harney must set out how she proposes to proceed in the wake of this debacle." ENDS
