Abolition of water charges is the loud, clear and unequivocal demand of the Irish people - Lynn Boylan MEP

17 September, 2016 - by Senator Lynn Boylan

Sinn Féin’s Dublin MEP Lynn Boylan has told the government that nothing but the full and complete abolition of water charges, and the dismantling of Irish Water, will satisfy the democratic wishes of the Irish people.

She said that a Sinn Féin motion calling for the abolition of household water charges, and co-signed by Right2Water supporting TDs, would be debated in the Dail on September 28th.

Speaking at today's Right2Water National Demonstration ahead of the new Dáil term, Lynn Boylan MEP said;

"At demonstration after demonstration in the capital city, and in towns & villages throughout this state, the people have sent the government their message.

"We have marched in the sun, in the rain, and through the wind to drum home our demand. Yet it continues to fall upon deaf ears.

"The message has never been ambiguous or hard to work out.

"Abolition of water charges is the loud, clear and unequivocal demand of the Irish people."We have had eight marches in two years and we have delivered blow after blow to Irish Water and its supporters.

"We have seen deadlines extended, so-called conservation bribes introduced, flat rate payments proposed, a nine month suspension.

"We have had an election that has returned a majority of TDs who ran on a platform of ending water charges.

"And all the while Irish Water has thrown €2million of your money at the media in advertising spending to peddle their wares.

"Fianna Fáil’s miraculous conversion from introduction to abolition is only one of many achievements that you and the Right2Water movement have achieved.

"However, we can only guess what their position on Water Charges will be by Monday morning.

"The pillars of the establishment have lined up to smother this movement and protect the water charges regime.

"Yet here we are again - undaunted, energised and continuing the fight for the right to water.

"For our part, on September 28th, Sinn Féin will bring a motion before the Dáil calling for the abolition water charges. It is co-signed by Right2Water supporting TDs.

"Let's see then if Micheal Martin and his Fianna Fáil TDs will put their votes where their mouths are.

"Across Europe, ordinary, decent people are watching Ireland.

"They are watching Ireland with its zero water poverty strike a blow for water movements across the EU and further afield who know all too well what happens when water charges are introduced.

"They know what it’s like to have their water cut off.

"They know what it’s like to spend up to 6% of their income on water.

"They know that water charges and metering are the slippery slope to privatisation.

"Ask the people of Berlin or England about water privatisation, about escalating costs to fill shareholders pockets.

“Ask the people of Greece and Italy about the pressure the Troika put on them to sell off their public water.

“If this government and the last had no intention of selling off Irish Water, why have they refused us our referendum?

“There can be no more ifs, buts or maybes.

"The government must scrap water charges and abolish Irish Water."
