Minister Coveney must take immediate action on Traveller Fire Safety report – Curran

22 September, 2016 - by Chris Curran

Sinn Féin councillor for Glencullen Sandyford Chris Curran has called the Minister for Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government Simon Coveney to step up the mark to insure that all Traveller accommodation sites are safe.

Curran’s call comes in the wake of the release of the National Directorate for Fire and Emergency Management’s fire safety audit.

Cllr Curran said:

“The first thing the Minister could do is to order that all sites have fire and carbon monoxide detection systems implemented, routinely checked and maintained.

“He could ensure that all sites are accessible to emergency services, by issuing a ministerial order to the Chief Executives of the local authorities. Many sites have locked barriers that, in particular, prevent ambulance crews from entering sites.

“These are simple measures that would vastly reduce the risk.

“In most cases, local authorities are landlords and Travellers are their tenants. The Minister needs to get tough with local authorities and remind Chief Executives that councils have a duty of care to their tenants.”
